TALK: GESTURES OF REBELLION – DANCE AS RESISTANCE
With Dr. Elaheh Hatami, Dr. Gustavo Fijalkow, Elsa Artmann and Juliane Victor
The talk after the performance invites us to view dance not only as an art form, but also as a means of political expression: the body between power, resistance and cohesion in times of growing authoritarian movements.
Based on their choreographic work, the participants discuss how political experiences become visible in the body. They ask what role dance and performance can play in times of crisis and social upheaval. What possibilities does art have to respond to these situations? And what responsibility does it bear today? Dance can show how power works, how vulnerable or strong bodies are, and how breaks and damage are dealt with.
This also involves the historical depth of these fractures: how do past experiences shape our present and our present bodies? Are social rifts an exception – or are they a permanent feature of our coexistence?
A special focus is placed on body politics and memory, especially in connection with contemporary Iranian dance. Dr Elaheh Hatami, dance and performance scholar, talks about dance practice under conditions of repression, migration and political control. Dr Gustavo Fijalkow and Elsa Artmann complement the discussion with perspectives from their choreographic practice.
