WORKING SURFACE

WORKING SURFACE is a new interdisciplinary work which is being co-produced during the 2024-2025 season. It focuses on body music, contemporary dance and physical theatre and uses the sounding body, the moving body and a camera as working surfaces and objects that take up space. The choreutic format is based on the concept of improvography, a blend between improvisation and choreography which is very common in my creation process because it makes every show full of surprises for both the audience and the performer. Working Surface takes the body as a surface to work on, a surface that you can beat and percuss, a surface that fills space and a surface that protects you from injuries. For this reason the performers are advocating for the positive things of having a big body and seeing it as a larger surface to play and create on. 
Through this new choreographic duet Natasa Chanta-Martin is looking to bring together two different worlds: one world where being thin equals being healthy and where body shaming is a big part of dance culture, and a second world which is developing awareness against this taboo by advocating against fat-phobia and promoting body positivity. However, the project is not an activism manifesto. It invites on stage two successful, strong, female, overweight, professional performers who prove through their actions that one’s big body is useful for playing music, claiming space and gaining agency. A large part of the piece showcases body percussion as the most ecological performing art because the dancer creates their music, it can be practiced anywhere because it is just you with your body and it does not need any specific costumes. It is the music-dance of our ancestors and it is the oldest and newest art form at once!

On Wednesday, December 4th, the DANCE WORKSHOP: WORK YOUR SURFACE with Natasa Chanta-Martin and Nadi Gogoulou will take place from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Before the premiere on Friday, December 6th, the BEAUTYSESSION: GRAND BEAUTY ON TOUR will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the LOFFT foyer, featuring the transcultural salon for beauty, diversity, and dialogue.
