Childishly weak or a pawn in male interests, ultimately ending up dead or declared insane. In a pub, surrounded by beer glasses and bar fumes, a singer wrestles with her love of opera and the roles she is expected to play in it.
Women in operas are either defamed or killed. Giselle has had enough. She has actually achieved her dream. She can finally earn her living as an opera singer. But she is increasingly despairing of her roles, which convey a regressive image of women. Is it possible to enjoy opera detached from current social debates? Do you have to ignore the plot in order to surrender to the music? Or is it possible to address the problems of opera in the staging?
In her conflict, Giselle spontaneously enlists the help of the pub musician and sings about her pain, her melancholy and her love of opera. When her colleague Marco shows up, Giselle's narrative threatens to spiral out of control.
Between arias and lively storytelling, VIVA LA PRIMADONNA offers an evening of opera without grandiose buildings, dress codes and outdated social images, but with pub flair and a dash of punk.
