Presentation: International Caroline Neuber Scholarship

Samara Hersch (Amsterdam)

As part of the International Caroline-Neuber-Scholarship of the City of Leipzig, Samara Hersch will be a guest in Leipzig in February 2023.

Samara Hersch is working on the development of her new project: "It's Going to Get Dark", which will have its German premiere in July 2023 at Theater Der Welt(en) in Frankfurt/Offenbach.
In this project, she wants to bring young people and seniors together to work with them and consider how conversations can create critical perspectives around insecurity, hope and change.
hope and change can emerge. She is exploring what kinds of conversations can take, what kinds of things are spoken (or left unspoken) when different generations sit together in the dark.

She will also spend part of the grant preparing a performative talk that will examine the trajectory of her practice from 2010 to 2023 through the lens of friendship and entanglement. The motivation for this new work comes from numerous invitations to speak about her work. In doing so, Samara Hersch is interested in presenting art-making as an ongoing dialogue, engaging the interlocutors and webs of relationships that allow ideas and new projects to emerge, questions to be asked, and acts of solidarity to be practiced.

Samara Hersch is supported by the residency of Schauspiel Leipzig as part of the International Caroline Neuber Fellowship of the City of Leipzig, where she first works, and subsequently also rehearses at LOFFT - DAS THEATER.

In the final presentation of the scholarship she will give insights into her process and the state of her work.

Moderation: Thomas Frank, Artistic Director of the Residence of Schauspiel Leipzig

The International Caroline Neuber Scholarship has been awarded since 2020 and expands the Caroline Neuber Prize, which has been awarded since 1998. It honors a contemporary understanding of theater, theater as a place as well as a medium of social understanding and dialogue at the center of a vibrant urban society. The focus is on young European artists whose work sets standards in the spirit of the German actress and theater principle Caroline Friederike Neuber.

Seven Leipzig theater institutions, which are actively networked internationally, propose artists for the award and later support the respective scholarship holder during her working stay in Leipzig. The partners of the international Caroline Neuber Fellowship are euro-scene Leipzig, Westflügel Leipzig, LOFFT - DAS THEATER, Schauspiel Leipzig, Schaubühne Lindenfels, Theater der Jungen Welt and Oper Leipzig.

From the nominees, an independent jury selects the artist to receive the scholarship.
