ELLA
SEBASTIAN WEBER DANCE COMPANY (LEIPZIG)
Between dance, text, percussion and audio recordings, a finely pulsating performance emerges about the power of grandmothers.
Four performers move through a stage set consisting of a stove, bathtub, wooden floorboards and other pieces of furniture, creating a scene in which people and memories appear and disappear. The starting point is an interview with Ella Weber (1915-2015), a worker, mother and grandmother from the Palatinate region of Germany, who looks back on a century of life with humour and dignity. The performance combines dance, text, percussion and documentary audio recordings into a multi-layered interplay of movement, language and sound. As if in a dream, we follow the puzzle of images in which humour and tragedy come together with strange ease. Atmospheric, sombre, rebellious and warm-hearted.
ELLA is a play about the power of grandmothers. About home and foreign lands, about female life plans and the pace of the world. It reflects on gender roles and resilience: what ideas about femininity, origin and family have become ingrained in our bodies? Which ‘grandmotherly qualities’ do we want to take with us today, and which do we want to overcome? A piece that rolls up its sleeves. That tackles, tidies up, airs out.
On Saturday and Sunday, 11th and 12th April, a PHYSICAL INTRODUCTION will take place 45 minutes before the performance. Everyone is invited to take part, no prior experience required.
From 12 years.
Individual passages in German, no language barrier.
